What Is an A-Frame Crane?
An A-frame crane is the common shop name for a portable gantry crane whose leg assemblies form the letter A — two angled uprights joined by bracing under each end of a horizontal beam. A trolley rides the beam, a hoist hangs from the trolley, and the whole structure stands on casters instead of hanging from building steel. Buyers say “A-frame crane” or “A-frame hoist”; manufacturers list the same machine as a portable gantry crane. It is one machine family with two names.
Why the legs form an A
The A-geometry is structural, not styling. Spreading each pair of uprights into a triangle gives the crane a wide stance at the floor and a stiff, braced path for the load — which is what lets a freestanding crane stand unanchored and shrug off the small side loads of real rigging. A-frame crane vs. A-frame hoist
People use both phrases for the whole rig, but strictly speaking the crane is the rolling A-frame structure — beam, legs, trolley, casters — and the hoist is the lifting device hung from the trolley’s shackle, usually a manual or electric chain hoist bought separately and sized to the crane’s rated capacity. If you search “A-frame hoist,” what you’re almost certainly shopping for is the crane; the hoist is the second purchase.
What A-frame cranes lift
The same work as any portable gantry, because that’s what they are: pump pulls, motor and gearbox swaps, HVAC components, machinery positioning, and maintenance lifts in rooms where a truck can’t go. The shape shows up wherever the lift has to come to the work — the crane breaks down, passes through a doorway, and reassembles at the job.
