Should You Buy or Rent a Portable Gantry Crane?
Rent when the need is short, one-off, or still undefined. Buy when the crane earns its keep on the calendar — or has to be on hand for the lift you didn’t plan. That’s the short version, and for a lot of buyers it settles the question. - How often will you lift? Not “how often could we” — how many times in the next twelve months can you actually name? A crane used on a schedule is a different purchase than a crane used once.

- Does it need to be there for the unplanned lift? If a pump fails on a Friday, an owned crane is in your building and a rented one is a phone call, a delivery window, and a wait.
- Is the configuration specific to you? Standard capacity and span rent easily. A crane matched to your doorway height, your machine’s footprint, or an unusual span is an ownership case — you’d be re-specifying it every time you rented.

How to run the break-even yourself
The arithmetic is simple once you stop looking for a universal number. Take the rental cost for one typical use — including delivery both ways — and multiply it by the number of uses you named in question one. Compare that to the purchase price, then adjust both sides for the things people usually leave out:
- Add to the rental side: the coordination time per rental, and the cost of the lift you couldn’t make on short notice (delayed production, a crew standing around, an overtime window).
- Add to the ownership side: storage space, periodic inspection, and wear parts over the years you’ll hold it.
